Since the devastating earthquake in the island nation of Haiti, First United Methodist Church has been quick to gather together around our own Haitian family, the Preptits, to show our love and support to them and for their family and friends still in Haiti.

Laferne’s mother lives in Port-au-Prince and now lives under a tree, refusing to go back inside for fear of aftershocks.  He was not sure for several days whether she had survived or not.  His wife, Melila, has a sister, cousins and many friends whom she has not heard from still today.

The congregation has taken up an offering twice during Sunday morning service and has collected more than $6,000, which already is being used for Haitian relief fund.

Laferne started immediately to obtain a plane ticket to Haiti to see for himself the devastation of his country and to try to find information about family members and friends.  He will be flying from Tri-Cities on Tuesday, February 9.  He is planning to set up a home for orphaned children in his mother’s home to give these children a home, food, clothing and schooling until things get better and perhaps some of them find family members still alive.  His heart is heavy for all the children he is seeing lost and alone in the streets of Port-au-Prince in the news stories coming from his native land.  This is what First Church is trying to help with.

This Sunday, February 7, the community is invited to come to First United Methodist for a Haitian luncheon and to donate money for Leferne’s trip to Haiti and for his home for homeless, lost children.

You also may donate right now by clicking on one of the links below and entering your credit card information.  All of your money will be going directly to Haitian Relief.
